RFT (STATRON, VEB)

Made in East Germany (GDR) during the 1980's, these cutehi-fi speakers were sold in huge numbers. Here in Western Canada, A&B Sound was the principal retailer, and imported full containers of RFT bookshelf speakers, especially the diminutive BR29 and slightly larger K14-KB, then sold them well below their real market value. This was because the VEB (Volks Electroniks Bureau) factory, a large state-run electronics concern, needed hard currency. So while our perception of RFT was that they were good cheap speakers, they were ac tually well respected all across Europe, where they cost far more.

The slightly larger RFT Carrera has a bit more bass output, but is generally similar to the smaller and more popular little BR29. RFT's floor-standing 3-way models were not as popular as the bookshelf models, so fewer examples have passed through our hands. The enclosures are well designed and built and most of the driver units are excellent. We have had spectacular results replacing the original RFT dome midranges (definitely their weakest point) with new cone midranges and modifying their original (rather simplistic) crossovers. These simple changes dramatically improve their vocal qualities and definition, and allows the existing RFT woofer and tweeter to really shine. We have replaced the foam edges on hundreds of RFT woofers with new parts, giving them a second 15-year life, and have successfully repaired or replaced dozens of RFT Mylar dome tweeters.
